What's After the Movie API
Explore movies, people, companies, film-music concerts, and the stories behind the films. Search the catalog, follow connections between movies and books or vehicles, and add plot summaries, ending explanations, and recommendations to your application.
Authentication
Send your API key with every request: Authorization: Bearer YOUR_API_KEY. Keep keys on your server, outside public browser code and distributed apps.
Find a movie
Start with GET /movies?q=Inception, or search using imdb_id or tmdb_id. Use an ID or slug from the results to retrieve movie details. The detail response includes cast, directors, ratings, links, and available_content.
Read explanations
Choose the section you need, such as /movies/{movie}/content/ending. Summaries and ending explanations return Markdown; timelines, themes, and characters return structured data. Most sections contain spoilers; use the spoiler-free summary endpoint for discovery previews. An unavailable section returns 404 with code content_not_available.
Pagination
List responses contain data and pagination. Set limit between 1 and 100 (default 20). When has_more is true, pass next_cursor as cursor with the same endpoint and filters. Cursors expire after 24 hours. Concert schedules, nominations, adaptations, and collection movies have pagination inside their respective detail fields.
Response conventions
Use GET for all endpoints. Dates use YYYY-MM-DD. Concert dates are local calendar dates without a time or timezone. Unknown values are null; a successful search with no matches returns an empty list. Rating scores retain their provider’s scale. Examples are illustrative.
Errors and retries
Errors contain error.code, error.message, and error.request_id. Invalid or unsupported parameters return 400; missing resources return 404. On 429, wait for the number of seconds in Retry-After before retrying. Retry temporary server errors with exponential backoff, and include the request ID when reporting a problem.
